January 30, 2007

St. Paul, MN - 90 state legislators and their staff gathered in the Minnesota House Chambers to hear leading scientists from the University of Minnesota, polar explorer Will Steger, and leaders from faith communities as they gave an unprecedented presentation on global warming and practical solutions for the state.

Will Steger gave a slide presentation of his first-hand experience of the effects of global warming on the Arctic and Antarctic regions including quotes from the Inuit leaders about how they are being impacted in their regions. Dr. David Tilman, Regents’ Professor McKnight Presidential University Chair of Ecology at the University of Minnesota,  Dr. Lee Frelich, University of Minnesota Forest Ecologist and Dr. Lucinda Johnson, Sr. Research Associate for Center for Water and the Environment at the University of Minnesota Duluth, described the potential impacts of global warming in Minnesota with a scientific call for action to slow global warming.

Faith leaders included Catholic Archbishop Harry Flynn of the St. Paul-Minneapolis Archdiocese and Bishop Craig Johnson from the Minneapolis Area Synod of the ELCA , who presented the moral imperative for action.
