Consumer choices shape the economy. According to the most recent Consumer Expenditures survey, the average U.S. household spent $40,677 in 2002. That totals over $4.5 billion for all households. This consumer spending is an essential part of the U.S. economic system and influences both methods of production and attitudes toward labor.In this context, consumer choice can be a tool for bringing greater justice into society. Each dollar spent is a chance to consider how our choices reflect the principles of Catholic Social Teaching. The following links illustrate how the marketplace can be used to support justice in labor and production practices. Special Event: Fair Trade Holiday "Shopportunity" at the Resource Center of the Americas From November 18-December 30, the Resource Center of the Americas (3019 Minnehaha Ave., Mpls.) will offer fair-trade crafts from throughout the Americas. First chance to purchase these items will be at an Open House on Friday, November 18, at 7 pm ($15 per person, two people for $25. No one turned away for lack of funds). The Resource Center Bookstore offers an array of books for children and adults in English, Spanish and bilingual editions as well as holiday and other greeting cards, 2005 calendars, fair trade coffees and chocolates, soups and syrups. Remember – it’s not just shopping, it’s JUST shopping!
